Very well put. Though I am not an Indonesia, I would like to agree that Dutch colonial repression was certainly noted for it’s mercilessness, before and after then second world war. Consider that the police actions post war would have persisted if not for US intervention and their global commitment against communism (essentially seeing Sukarno on the same side as them). The Pemuda movements were violent, certainly, but so was Dutch rule.

Why let the sins of the father cloud the future of the son? Most indonesians I know are generally friendly. Vice is something that is found all over, whether in Indonesia or in Holland. Peaceee

@Zatapa: Well, I’m not quite sure. About the bad things that happened to many Dutch, I don’t know. (I didn’t born yet :p) I’m pretty sorry if that’s true. But, just to clear everything, we aren’t proud because of the fighting. Do you know that it is very hard for them(the Indonesian warriors back then) just to sing the Indonesian’s national song? Back then, every time someone want to stick an Indonesian flag, the dutch/japanese would shoot them. And about the raping, and torturing, and stuffs, the Indonesians back then were not allowed to have much educations, so as moral educations. And, again, we’re not proud of fighting, we apologized too for all the terrible past. So please don’t say it like Indonesians are all mean and terrible.

Would it not be good to also mention that members of the Pemuda movement have also done horrible things to the Dutch, such as killing women & children that had just been released from the Japanese camps? Why aren’t Indonesians aware of the fact that many Dutch were actually raped, tortured and cut into pieces by Pemuda members? Sure, colonization is something of the past that we Dutch aren’t proud of, but at least we apologised for the bad things that we’ve done in the past, whereas Indonesians are still proud of fighting with the Japanese.
