The Corpse Flower

In 1818, an Indonesian guide working for Dr. Joseph Arnold, discovered a giant flower without any leaves or a stem. The flower was found in one of Indonesia’s rain forests, it looks and smells like rotting flesh. It rarely blooms and when it blooms the stinking smell attracts flies and beetles for pollination.

The Rafflesia, as it is named after the expedition leader Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles, has been voted as one of the world’s top 10 ugliest plant in July 2009. The corpse flower only blooms every four to six years within its 40-year life expectancy. The flower is described as the world’s largest; reaching 5ft high and 4ft wide. It only blooms for 3 days and for 8 hours of these 3 days, the flower gives out the rotting flesh smell.

You can find the corpse flower only in the rainforests of Sumatra or in Bogor Botanical Garden.
